A charming medieval village, Castel del Monte is in the Gran Sasso/Monti della Laga National Park, a stunningly beautiful part of Italy and just minutes from the ski resorts.

In the heart of the Gran Sasso national park, the village rises on a hill dominated by the watchtower of the castle. The most ancient district, known as Riscetto, still has remains of the town walls. The town was destroyed in the 16th century by the L’Aquila army led by Muzio Colonna.
Worth a visit is the church of the Madonna del Suffragio, with a Madonna wearing the typical dress of the village. In the sacristy, you'll see a silver cross of the goldsmiths school of Sulmona, from the 15th century. The church of St Marco Evangelist has Renaissance and Baroque altars with statues from the 16th century.
The town lies on the ancient sheep droving road, and is famed for its cheese production to this day. You can visit the wool museum, a witness to the importance of sheep farming. The entire historical centre of the town, with warehouses and abandoned houses has been transformed into a living museum. This area produces superb cheeses too.
