The town also has the Santuario della Madonna dei Miracoli, an important religious destination for pilgrims from all over the Christian world. A Roman settlement existed in the area, uncovered in recent archeological digs. The medieval centre dates back to the ninth century, when it was a farming town serving the nearby Benedictine monastery of Santo Stefano ad rivum maris (which became Rivomare). The name of the place derives from Roberto Bordinus, one of its early feudal Lords.

Sights in the town include the 19th century bell tower, the 18th century parish church, with its imposing Baroque façade and dome, mentioned by poet Gabriele D'Annunzio mentions in his Trionfo della morte. The remains of the Monastery of Santo Stefano in Rivomare (842) were repeatedly plundered and destroyed by the Turks in the 16th century.
