Massa di Maratea occupies a superb position. This is a little, unspoiled Calabrian village. The land lies 500 metres from the Redentore, the imposing marble statue of Christ, gazing inland toward the Calabrian mountains. At its feet lies the Basilica di San Biagio, a Christian church on the site of the ancient pagan temple of Minerva. Each year in May, this borgo is the focus of Maratea's main festivities, as a statue of the town's patron saint is pulled up the hill.

Unspoiled as it is, the hamlet is handy for the beautiful Tyrrhenian coast, a marvellous mix of rocky coves and sandy beaches, with good resorts, bars and restaurants. There is Maratea, the old town a jumble of steep, narrow alleyways and piazzas. And there is the untamed hinterland of Calabria's hills, a vast untouched wilderness.
