The northenmost region of Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige borders Switzerland and Austria, and that flavour is present in Trentino properties for sale. Stone-and-wood chalets and castles pepper the mountains, or there are town houses in Bolzano. Equal proximity to good skiing or the cultural delights of neighbouring Venice may be a big plus to buying property in Trentino Alto Adige.

Veneto is a superb region,with not just Venice but beautiful cities such as Verona, Vicenza and Treviso to recommend it. Look for villas, including superb ville venete in the rose-coloured stone of Verona - an affordable alternative to Venice itself.

You may not have considered Friuli, but the north-eastern reaches of Italy, rolling round the Adriatic to border with Slovenia, offers marvellous bargains property in the lovely old port of Trieste (more central Europe than Mediterranean) can be very affordable.

Emilia-Romagna, with its capital Bologna, not only offers Italy’s finest food (no mean boast) but some fine property for sale. With a very high standard of living you won’t find developed property cheap, but there are still farms ripe for redevelopment in the Apennine foothills.
